Cavities and Fillings

Tooth decay (cavities) has bothered people for many thousands of years. Cavities are caused by bacteria that exists in our teeth in a bio-film called plaque. The bacteria use carbohydrates (contained in sugary foods) to produce acids which damage tooth structure.

Some patients are completely unaware that they have a cavity as they do not feel any pain at all. This is because the outer enamel coating of the teeth have no nerves and as a result, are unable to feel pain. When decay moves to the inner dentine core, then sensitivity may begin. Patients are sometimes caught off guard when they are shown a small cavity in their mouth as they have no pain. We recommend you have your teeth checked every 6 months. This ensures if any problems occur, they can be fixed even before they start to cause problems. It is far better to fill a small cavity before it starts to cause discomfort as this prevents the need for more extensive treatment such as root canal, crowns or extraction.

At Goodna Family Dentist, we only use the latest in white fillings ensuring our patients have invisible metal-free fillings.

Crowns and Bridges

There are times when teeth cannot be restored with a filling. At Goodna Family Dentist we sometimes find teeth are severely damaged and the only possible restoration is a dental crown made from either porcelain materials or precious metals.

If your teeth are severely damaged to the point that a crown is the only possible solution, our dentists will sit down with you and go through the procedures required to restore your teeth to normal function. Our dentists use special instruments and reduce the tooth to a size required to hold the crown. We then take an impression of this and send it to a laboratory. Once the crown is received back from the lab it is cemented in place. In between visits a temporary crown is placed.

Your Goodna Family Dentist will thoroughly explain the procedures required to ensure your crown is properly looked after in order to give your new crown or bridge the best possible life.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a thin layer of restorative material placed over a tooth surface to improve aesthetics and conceal any chipped, misaligned, damaged or discoloured teeth. They are used pre-dominantly for front teeth and can add to the overall appearance of your smile.

Porcelain veneers can be used as a cost effective treatment solution for our patients. At Goodna Family Dentist, our dentists will sit down with you and discuss a thorough treatment plan and outline the procedures involved in bringing together your beautiful new smile.

Extractions

Your Goodna Family Dentist will always try to provide options to save your tooth. However, if extraction is requested or is the only option available then we strive to minimise your discomfort during and after the procedure. We use numbing gel before we insert the local anaesthesia to minimise discomfort.

We understand it is not always possible for you to afford complex treatments to save teeth and in some circumstances, an extraction is required. We therefore advise all of our patients to visit us regularly, so that problems can be detected when they are small and easily treated.

Should you have any queries regarding an extraction or simply just want a second opinion please don’t hesitate to contact Goodna Family Dentist on 3381 8585. Our staff will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Wisdom Teeth

Many people are unaware they have wisdom teeth until they begin to pierce through the gums at the back of their mouths. Human evolution is phasing out our wisdom teeth as we no longer need as many big grinding teeth because our diet is much more refined than in the time of our ancestors. Our jaws are getting much smaller and as such we are finding there is often not enough room for wisdom teeth.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain. The pain occurs usually as a result of infection of either the gums around the wisdom tooth (pericoronitis) or decay of the wisdom tooth because they are extremely difficult to clean being so far back in the mouth. If left untreated, the infections can spread and become quite serious even leading to difficulty breathing and a multitude of other health problems.

Wisdom teeth can also cause crowding of other teeth especially teeth at the front of the jaw. Sometimes it may be necessary to refer patients to get their wisdom teeth removed under a general anaesthetic (where patients are put to sleep) such as if the teeth are impacted or cannot possibly be done in the chair under a local anaesthetic. Your Goodna Family Dentist will discuss all the relevant options with regard to the removal of wisdom teeth so that an informed decision can be made.

If you, or we, feel your teeth require removal under general anaesthetic, we can organise a referral to an oral surgeon.

Root Canal Treatments

A root canal treatment may be required if decay has reached the nerve of your tooth and a simple filling is no longer possible. If the tooth is left untreated, significant pain and infection can occur. The spread of infection can cause major medical problems and a root canal treatment is usually recommended to save the tooth. Your Goodna Family Dentist can perform the procedure under a local anaesthetic.
